Case studies

The empirical investigation of the four case study regions follows an incremental approach including the following steps:

  1. Actor and institutional mapping: Inventory of developments, framework conditions, and actors based on document analysis (literature, database, web, etc.) as well as a small number of exploratory interviews. This first screening is complemented with a case study region specific expert workshop to gather input from local experts from governments, the private sector, think tanks, and civil society with different backgrounds and interests.
Identification of niches: The inventory is used to identify key actors and institutions, specific framework conditions, and key projects. Guided by a delphi-style expert consultation process, niches understood as innovative development projects, planning approaches and policies, technological innovations, and/or organizational or institutional novelties are selected to conduct in-depth micro case studies.
Micro case studies: Qualitative field work including archival work, interviews, observations in the field, participation in events, etc. in order to construct biographies for 3-4 selected micro case studies for each of the four case study regions.

  2. Interpretation and validation of findings: Qualitative content analysis of interview material and other collected data. Results are discussed with local experts and project advisers, for example, through Delphi-style group discussions.
  3. Micro case studies: Qualitative field work including archival work, interviews, observations in the field, participation in events, etc. in order to construct biographies for 3-4 selected micro case studies for each of the four case study regions.
  4. Interpretation and validation of findings: Qualitative content analysis of interview material and other collected data. Results are discussed with local experts and project advisers, for example, through Delphi-style group discussions.
